Former Democratic Nassau County Legis. David Mejias was arrested by Nassau police Thursday night in a case involving stolen property, according to a spokesman for District Attorney Kathleen Rice.

While details of the arrest have yet to be released, Mejias, a family law attorney with the firm of Mejias Milgrim & Alvarado in Glen Cove, is expected to be arraigned Friday in Nassau District Court in Hempstead.

Rice spokesman Paul Leonard said Mejias faces charges of third-degree grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, both felonies.

The case is not the first brush with the law for Mejias, who served in the legislature from 2003 to 2010. He represented the 14th District in Farmingdale.

Mejias was charged in September 2010 with menacing, stalking and reckless endangerment after he was accused of using his Cadillac to tailgate, repeatedly chase and cut off his ex-girlfriend's Land Rover as she drove with her boyfriend to Matinecock. At one point, the ex-girlfriend said Mejias got out of his car, slammed his hands on the hood of the Land Rover and unleashed a profanity-laced tirade.

Mejias, who at the time was running for the State Senate in the 6th District against Sen. Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City), pleaded not guilty and said the incident was overblown and that there was no threat of violence. He later dropped out of the State Senate race.

The Queens district attorney's office, which handled the prosecution of the politically charged case, dismissed the charges in June 2011 and the case was sealed.
