Members of Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano's administration were tight-lipped Monday about details of his revised budget, which a state fiscal watchdog has demanded by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Mangano spokesman Brian Nevin would only say, "The deadline will be met."
Last week, State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Diamond ruled that the Nassau Interim Finance Authority can oversee the county's budget. The six-member NIFA board had found a $176-million deficit in the 2011 budget and voted in January to take control of the county's finances. NIFA told Mangano, who maintains his budget is balanced, to submit a revised fiscal plan by today.
Mangano has announced $121 million in spending cuts that include $50.5 million in labor savings from layoffs, attrition and elimination of vacant positions. He has said he will not raise taxes.
On Saturday, Mangano, union leaders and NIFA representatives met to discuss possible labor concessions. But union leaders said they are unsure an agreement can be reached.
