Dense fog advisory for LI lifted
An early-morning fog that shrouded areas of Long Island in a pea soup-thick mix Monday has burned off, as the National Weather Service canceled its dense fog advisory at 9 a.m.
The weather service issued the advisory at 5:23 a.m., warning that the fog was causing hazardous travel conditions.
The advisory covered Nassau, Suffolk and Queens.
The weather service warned some "isolated areas" with visibilities of a quarter-mile or less may remain until 10 a.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration had no reported fog-related delays in the area.
The weather service said a dense fog advisory means visibilities were reduced to a quarter-mile or less in some areas, and urged drivers to slow down and use low-beam headlights or fog lights as a result.
Drivers also were urged to leave extra distance between the vehicle ahead of them on the road -- especially in case a sudden stop was necessary.
