A fire tore through a Town of Hempstead sanitation building in Merrick on Sunday morning before firefighters extinguished the blaze, officials said.

Town workers spotted the fire at the Merrick Road waste transfer station shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday, Hempstead spokesman Mike Fricchione said. Firefighters from the Merrick, North Merrick and Bellmore fire departments had extinguished it by 10 a.m.

No one was harmed and no equipment was damaged in the blaze, the cause of which is unknown, Fricchione said.
