A 10-year-old Valley Stream girl who saved her family during a fire at her home last month was honored last Wednesday by a village board of education and several state lawmakers.
Diana Loveras, a fifth-grader, was presented with a State Senate proclamation “commending her bravery,” according to the office of State Sen. Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach). Assemb. Brian Curran (R-Lynbrook) and Assemb. Michaelle Solages (D-Elmont) also honored Loveras during a board of education meeting of Valley Stream School District 24.
Diana awoke to smoke early in the morning on Nov. 14 and alerted her mother. Her warning ensured that her family, including her two younger siblings, and a family in an upstairs apartment escaped the home safely.
She calmly told a 911 operator what was happening; the fire chief at the scene has said she was “calm, cool and collected” during the blaze.
Valley Stream Village also issued her a proclamation last month, and the Kiwanis Club of the Five Towns gave her family gift cards to Target. The village’s mayor and board of trustees also gave the family a Target gift card.
