Dispute over legislator's school board post

A new Nassau legislator is under fire for keeping her post as Baldwin's school board president -- which critics say violates the county charter. Laura Curran (D-Baldwin) took office in January. The charter states that no part-time legislator may hold "any other public office." Jack McCloy, a Baldwin activist, called out Curran at last week's legislature meeting, saying she must quit the school board. But Curran noted her school position is unpaid, and she plans to finish the five months on her term to help the district's transition.
