Dog dies in Glen Cove blaze, fire official say

A dog died after a two-family house in Glen Cove erupted in flames Tuesday afternoon — but none of the eight people who live there or the 80 firefighters who extinguished the blaze were injured, according to a fire official.

The fire, at a house on Dickson Street, was reported around 2 p.m.

"Upon arrival, we were met with high winds, a heavy volume of fire," Philip Grella, first assistant chief for the Glen Cove Fire Department, said by telephone. 

"We went to a second alarm due to the wind conditions," he said, noting 11 fire departments responded.

The Red Cross, contacted by the Glen Cove mayor, arranged accommodations for the occupants, Grella said.

The house was severely damaged. "I think it's going to be a total loss," Grella said.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by Nassau County fire officials.
