The Massapequa Fire Department was called to a house fire at 2:04 a.m. Saturday on Delta Road in Massapequa. Firefighters arrived to find a one-story ranch with fire through the roof. It took firefighters nearly an hour to bring the fire under control; the occupant home at the time escaped injury. South Farmingdale firefighters assisted at the scene. A barking dog helped alert an elderly woman to a fast-moving blaze that nearly destroyed her Massapequa house early Saturday, authorities said.

With the help of a neighbor, the woman evacuated the ranch-style home on Delta Road after hearing the barking collie and the house alarm, said Peter Anglim, Massapequa fire chief.

The call came in just after 2 a.m., authorities said.

The fire started in the attic and damaged the roof and first floor, leaving the home uninhabitable. It took about 75 fire personnel about 45 minutes to knock down the fire, Anglim said.

Neither the woman nor the collie were hurt, but a second dog belonging to the woman died in the blaze.

Anglim said the Red Cross has been notified; the woman will have to find another place to live.

The cause of the fire isn't suspicious but remains under investigation, Anglim said.

The woman's name wasn't released.
