Nassau DA: Three to be arraigned on charges of conspiring in murder-for-hire plot
Three men, including a Nassau cardiologist, are expected to be arraigned Wednesday on charges that they took part in a murder-for-hire plot as part of a joint takedown by the Nassau District Attorney, Nassau police and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, officials said Tuesday.
Dr. Anthony Moschetto, 54, James Chmela, 44, and James Kalamaras, 41, were arrested by Nassau police and federal officials Tuesday, acting District Attorney Madeline Singas' office said late Tuesday night.
They are in police custody, said district attorney spokesman Shams Tarek. The names of their attorneys could not be determined Tuesday night.
Prosecutors said Moschetto, a cardiologist who lives in Sands Point, was behind the plot. He is also accused of selling assault weapons and prescriptions for controlled substances, Singas' office said.
The charges against the three men include conspiracy, criminal solicitation, arson, and the criminal possession and sale of weapons and drugs, Singas' office said.
Moschetto as well as Chmela, of Selden, and Kalamaras, described only as living in Suffolk County, will be arraigned Wednesday afternoon at First District Court in Hempstead.
Tarek said he was not authorized to provide further details about the alleged scheme Tuesday night.
Singas as well as acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter and DEA acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge Bradley Cheek are scheduled to address the media Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in Mineola.
