The driver of a Jeep stopped Monday on suspicion of speeding on the Southern State Parkway ended up arrested on marijuana possession charges after police said the trooper smelled the drug.

State Police said Joan Demieri, 29, of Levittown, was speeding on the westbound parkway when she was pulled over by a trooper near Exit 18, Eagle Avenue, in Lakeview around 3:30 p.m.

Police said the trooper "detected a strong odor" of marijuana -- and a search yielded both marijuana and paraphernalia.

Demieri was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and speeding. She is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 26.
