An attempted traffic stop on suspicion of a routine violation turned into a pursuit on the Southern State Parkway Thursday afternoon, with the driver charged with possession of a stolen car, State Police said.

Police said a trooper tried to stop a Nissan Maxima on the eastbound Southern State near Exit 27, Wantagh Parkway, just before 4 p.m. on suspicion of an unsafe lane change. But driver Lamar Campbell, 18, of Brooklyn, instead led the trooper on a pursuit onto the Wantagh Parkway, police said.

Police said Campbell crashed into a car as he got off the parkway.

No one was injured, police said. Campbell and his two passengers were arrested.

Campbell was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and first-degree unlawful imprisonment for fleeing with passengers in his vehicle as well as reckless endangerment, fleeing from an officer and traffic violations, police said.

Police said charges on the two passengers are pending. Arraignment information was not immediately available.
