A Scarsdale man stopped on suspicion of speeding Wednesday in North Merrick faces a drunken driving charge after he nearly hit someone and his passenger threw a tennis ball at another car, State Police said.

Martin Saez, 31, of Summerfield Street, was driving east on the Southern State Parkway at 79 mph in a gray Honda Civic at about 7:22 p.m. when police stopped him near Exit 24, Merrick Avenue, police said.

Police said before being pulled over, Saez nearly struck another vehicle, and his passenger threw a tennis ball out the window at another car on the parkway.

Saez had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage and failed sobriety tests, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of DWI and provided a breath-analyzer reading of .10 percent, according to a news release.

He is charged with DWI and traffic violations and is scheduled to appear at First District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 17, police said.
