Driver with 4 teen passengers arrested under Leandra's Law
A Staten Island man faces a Leandra's Law charge after allegedly driving drunk with four teenage boys Saturday night on the Southern State Parkway in Hicksville, according to state police.
Douglas Lindros, 51, of 52 Van Name Ave., was driving a blue BMW east on the parkway when he was stopped for tailgating and flashing his high-beam lights near Exit 29, Hicksville Road, police said.
Troopers detected an odor of alcohol, police said, and Lindros failed a sobriety test. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, and police also said they found two partially smoked marijuana cigarettes and "a clear plastic bag containing a white, powdery substance." Police did not disclose the contents of the plastic bag.
Two of the passengers were 15 years old, police said, and two others were 16.
Charges against Lindros include aggravated driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and traffic violations. Arraignment information was not immediately available.
Under Leandra's Law, passed in November, the endangerment charge is a felony. The law was passed following the death of Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed in an alleged DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed on the West Side Highway.
