A toddler apparently drowned on Friday evening in the swimming pool of a house in South Farmingdale, according to Nassau police.

CPR was already being performed on the toddler when police officers and medics arrived and began helping, according to a police news release, which said he was brought to a hospital but couldn't be saved. At 7:47 p.m., he was declared dead.

The house is on Sixth Avenue. The case is being investigated as "an apparent drowning accident in a swimming pool," according to the release.

The toddler's name wasn't disclosed, nor were any other details of the incident.

About 350 children under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools each year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
