DWI charge after Hampton Bays crash
Police responding to the scene of a rollover crash in Hampton Bays late Wednesday found the driver, a Manhattan man, uninjured despite a downed utility pole and his car with "extensive damage."
Southampton Town police also said the officers soon determined driver Christian M. Soussan, 37, was drunk -- and charged him with driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, as well as with failure to maintain lane, an infraction.
The single-car crash occurred near the intersection of Springville Road and Mill Race at 11:10 p.m., police said.
They said Soussan was driving a 2009 Volkswagen west on Springville, lost control on a curve, struck a guardrail, a tree and a utility pole before he overturned. The utility pole was knocked into the road, blocking traffic, police said.
The road was closed more than three hours as a Long Island Power Authority crew replaced the damaged pole.
It was not immediately known how many utility customers were affected.
Arraignment details for Soussan also were not available.
Police said the Hampton Bays Fire Department and Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corp. both responded to the scene, but said Soussan was not injured in the crash.
