A State Police trooper who stopped to assist with a minor single-vehicle crash on the Southern State Parkway in North Massapequa on Tuesday found the driver to be intoxicated and a search of his Jeep uncovered three marijuana cigarettes, police said.

Peter Sarlanis, 22, of New Hyde Park, was arrested and charged with felony DWI -- for having at least one conviction within the past 10 years, police said -- as well as with unlawful possession of marijuana and traffic violations.

Police said the trooper was responding to reports of a crash on the southbound Bethpage State Parkway near the entrance to the Southern State and found Sarlanis with his black Jeep Grand Cherokee stopped on the eastbound Southern State east of Bethpage Parkway. The trooper said Sarlanis told him he had struck the guardrail.

The trooper detected "the odor of an alcoholic beverage" and said Sarlanis failed sobriety tests, police said.
