The Hempstead Town Board increased the penalties for sales to minors of vaping and smoking electronic cigarettes.

The Town Board voted unanimously Oct. 3 to issue summonses to business that sell tobacco, liquid nicotine and electronic cigarettes to anyone under 21. The town clerk’s office can issue minimum fines of $250 and maximum fines of $1,000 per violation.

Town officials said they recently met with Nassau County police to crack down on public vaping violations at area parks and town properties. The town recently erected signs warning of the effects of electronic cigarettes and signage banning vaping and smoking in parks.
