An East Meadow man locked himself in his bedroom for several hours Tuesday, threatening to do himself physical harm before surrendering, Nassau County police said.

Genri Palacios-Acosta, 27, had an altercation with his mother at their home on Hull Street and police responded at about 10:20 a.m., according to a news release.

Nassau County's Emergency Services Unit officers, the Bureau of Special Operations and the Hostage Negotiation Team were among the units responding, and Palacios-Acosta threatened to harm himself if police entered the bedroom, the release said.

After several hours of negotiating, Palacios-Acosta surrendered, police said. He was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.

Police said the altercation between Palacios-Acosta became verbal, physical and included property damage. His mother, who had "facial pain and an abrasion to her cheek," refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

A police spokeswoman said there was no indication Palacios-Acosta had a gun, and the "weapons" he threatened to use on himself included household items.

Palacios-Acosta is charged with criminal mischief, assault and menacing.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
