Nassau County and Lakeview firefighters battled a blaze in a box truck on Thursday night that injured the driver and left a charred pile of e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries, officials said.

Firefighters with the Lakeview Fire Department responded to the scene, at the corner of Mary Ann Lane and White Star Avenue, shortly after 11 p.m. They also found multiple e-bikes in a full truckload of debris, saying in their Facebook post that they worked in "extremely cold temperatures" using hose lines and requesting a sand truck from the Town of Hempstead.

The Nassau County Hazardous Materials team found several lithium-ion batteries on fire, assistant chief fire marshal James Hickman said in an email. Firefighters removed the batteries and packed them for proper storage and disposal, Hickman said.

Firefighters, paramedics and Nassau County police took the driver of the box truck to the burn unit at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, according to Lakeview firefighters.
