Cops: Freeport man fired gun during dispute with brother

A Freeport man suspected of shooting out of a second-floor apartment window was arrested Saturday morning after a 90-minute standoff with police, authorities said.

Police said Eric J. Torres, 29, fired multiple rounds from a handgun out the window at West Merrick Road and South Main Street during a dispute with his older brother.

Bullets struck the windshield of a car owned by the brother, Marcell Torres, 31, of Freeport. A passing Nassau County ambulance was also hit, police said.

No injuries were reported.

Nassau police special operations officers and emergency service units responding to the shooting surrounded the apartment building and ordered Eric Torres to come out, police said.

He initially refused but later surrendered without incident, authorities said.

Torres was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He is also facing a third-degree criminal mischief charge from an Aug. 5 incident, police said.

Marcell Torres, who was behind the building when officers arrived, was arrested at the scene on an outstanding warrant, police said.
