A former Stamford, Conn., police officer from Long Island has applied to a Connecticut state program that would give him up to two years' probation for charges that he showed cell-phone images of his genitals to three women, his lawyer confirmed Thursday.

Paul Mabey, a 14-year police officer who resigned in June, asked the state Superior Court in Bridgeport, Conn., Wednesday to be considered for the program, Eugene Riccio, his attorney said.

Mabey, 42, of Seaford, faces four counts of disorderly conduct after three women said he showed them the images during routine traffic stops.

Riccio said under the program a person is placed on probation, with certain terms and conditions, for up to two years. "Basically, if that person then stays out of trouble, after two years the charges are dismissed," Riccio said.

The program is open only to first-time offenders.

Mabey is scheduled to return to court Nov. 17 to see whether his application has been approved by a judge.

The alleged misconduct surfaced in late May, after a 26-year-old woman sent an e-mail to the Stamford Police Department, The Stamford Advocate newspaper and the American Civil Liberties Union. The e-mail said Mabey displayed the images after stopping the woman for a seat-belt enforcement check, according to published reports.

Two more women made similar accusations after reading newspaper reports about the incident.

Mabey resigned June 18.
