Ex-East Meadow school board member to sue cops
A former member of the East Meadow School Board has filed a notice that she intends to sue Nassau County because police responding to a domestic incident "pulled her hair, struck her, handcuffed her, hit her, punched her, kicked her then had her carted off in a police ambulance," her attorney said Tuesday.
The ex-board member, Abby Rothschild-Kaplan, says in papers filed Monday that the injuries occurred Aug. 9, when police were summoned to the couple's Prospect Avenue home for a dispute between Rothschild-Kaplan and her husband, David Kaplan, according to her attorney, Jeffrey S. Lisabeth, of Mineola.
Det. Lt. Kevin Smith, Nassau police spokesman, said the woman's allegations are being investigated by the department's Internal Affairs Unit. Police said they were called to the house because of a domestic disturbance between Kaplan and Rothschild-Kaplan.
Smith said he couldn't comment on the case because of Rothschild-Kaplan's pending litigation, but said she was hospitalized because "she displayed signs that she might endanger herself . . . or others."
Lisabeth said two police officers hit her after another closed the blinds.
Rothschild-Kaplan suffered bruises and contusions on her arms as well as head trauma, her attorney said.
No one was arrested in the incident, police said.
David Kaplan didn't immediately return a call for comment Tuesday.
Rothschild-Kaplan lost a race earlier this year for her school board position.
