A sleeping family of four who awoke to find their Levittown home ablaze Wednesday morning safely evacuated the house -- but the structure suffered major fire damage, police and fire officials said.

The fire at the home on Griddle Lane was reported in a 911 call received at 4:55 a.m., Nassau County police said.

The family was asleep and the father awoke to find a fire in the first-floor laundry room, police said. He promptly woke his wife, police said, and the husband, wife and two children evacuated the home.

Volunteers from the Levittown Fire Department battled the blaze, but, officials said, the fire caused a "complete collapse" of the second floor.

Police said the fire is not being considered suspicious, but said arson investigators have been unable to access the interior of the home due to the significant fire damage.
