A 47-year-old Far Rockaway man was found dead in his cell at the Nassau County jail in East Meadow Monday morning, authorities said, adding that the death appears to be from natural causes.

Kevin Brown was discovered unresponsive inside his jail cell and later pronounced dead by a Nassau County Ambulance Medical Technician at 6:55 a.m.

He had been arrested Jan. 13 and was being held for a petty larceny conviction, Nassau prosecutors said.

Nassau police Insp. Kenneth Lack said an autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death.

"Homicide was called out and investigated at the scene," Lack said, referring to Nassau homicide detectives. "He was a single inmate in his cell."

There is no suspicion of criminality in the case, officials said.

News of her son's death shocked Marcella Brown, 76, of Far Rockaway, who said she last spoke to her youngest son in January when he told her he would be coming home soon.

She received a phone call shortly before 9 a.m. Monday from Nassau detectives reporting that her son had died in custody.

The officers visited her home later that day, telling her that Kevin Brown was fine when correction officers performed routine checks at about 10 p.m. Sunday.

Hours later, though, one of her two other sons identified Brown's body, she said.

"I just feel numb because I'm looking for my son to come home," she said. "I don't know how I feel now."

Marcella Brown said her son was born in Manhattan but grew up in Far Rockaway where he -- and his telephone voice -- were well known. For up to three decades, she said, he had worked as a dispatcher for local car services, connecting people with their destinations.

"He enjoyed doing what he did," she said, adding "He's the best dispatcher out here in Far Rockaway."

But she said he had battled seizures stemming from a car accident he was in 20 years ago. He suffered head trauma in the crash and was prescribed Dilantin to combat seizures that he suffered.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
