Cops: Route 109 in Farmingdale closed because of fire in commercial building
A fire Friday evening in a commercial building in Farmingdale prompted police to close Route 109 in both directions, Nassau County police said.
Officers responded to a 911 call at about 5:30 p.m. for a fire at Tronic Plating Co. at 37 Potter Street, just off Route 109. Eight employees who were inside the building when the fire started were safely evacuated, police said. Two firefighters suffered smoke inhalation, however, and were transported to a hospital, according to police.
Fourteen fire departments responded with approximately 150 personnel and extinguished the blaze, authorities said.
Nassau County Fire Marshall Hazardous Materials officers were at the scene and the investigation was ongoing, according to police.
During the fire, Route 109 was closed between Staples Street and E. Carmans Road.
