An 89-year-old driver from Oceanside, who had stopped his 1999 Ford Explorer on the Long Island Expressway in Plainview late Tuesday night, was killed when his SUV was rear-ended by another, Nassau police said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had halted his SUV in the westbound HOV lane, near Exit 49, police said.

The 36-year-old driver of the 2018 Kia Sportage, a Miller Place resident, was traveling west when he crashed into the Ford Explorer around 11:33 p.m., causing the Ford Explorer to erupt in flames, police said.

He suffered a head laceration and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, police said.
