A Hempstead woman died Saturday afternoon following a fire in her apartment, authorities said.
The fire occurred at 34 Elk St. just after 1:30 p.m., where it is believed the 66-year-old woman lived alone, Nassau County police said.
The raging fire trapped the woman in her second-floor apartment, according to Nassau County Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro.
As many as 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, Uttaro said.
The woman was found in cardiac arrest and taken to Nassau University Medical Center, officials said. She was pronounced dead a short time later, said Lt. Richard Holland of the Hempstead Village Police.
Firefighters said they arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke coming from the second-floor apartment.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, though investigators do not believe the blaze was suspicious, Uttaro said.
The woman’s identity was being withheld, Nassau police said.
