Man killed crossing Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park, police say

A 56-year-old man was fatally struck while crossing Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park on Monday evening, the Nassau County Police Department said.
The department had not released the man's name or hometown as of Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened about 8:45 p.m. as the man was crossing the turnpike north near Nassau Boulevard. He, was struck by a 59-year-old man driving north in a 2020 Honda SUV, the release said. The driver stayed at the crash scene.
The pedestrian "suffered severe trauma," was brought to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to the release.
The release doesn’t say who is believed to be at fault, how the crash happened or the driver’s speed or give other details.
In 2024, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 308 pedestrians in New York State were killed by drivers, including 63 on Long Island: 26 in Nassau and 37 in Suffolk, according to tallies by the University at Albany-based Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research.
Newsday has reported that Long Island roads are among the state’s deadliest to walk and bike on, but drivers involved in crashes that kill pedestrians and bicyclists rarely face criminal charges.
