The Nassau County Police Department on Monday identified a pedestrian struck and killed early Saturday in Hempstead as Jose Vasquez Ruiz.

The 42-year-old Hempstead resident was attempting to cross in front of 545 Fulton Ave. when he was struck by a 2009 Nissan Rogue traveling south, police said in a news release Saturday. The crash was reported at 1:39 a.m., according to the release.

Ruiz was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The 53-year-old man driving the Nissan remained at the scene. A police spokesperson Monday said no charges had been filed in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
