Two years after he got out of jail, John A. Gotti, son of the late Gambino crime boss, may see his story on the big screen.
Fiore Films LLC of California and New York announced Wednesday it was working on a film about Gotti and his father, who died in 2002, and hopes to release it around Christmas 2011.
"That is the goal," said Marc Fiore, the independent producer working with Gotti for the yet untitled film.
"It is a movie of John Gotti Senior's life through this son's eyes," Fiore said. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed and there is no title yet, he added.
Gotti fought Manhattan federal prosecutors to a fourth mistrial in December 2009 on racketeering and murder charges. Under an agreement with the government, Gotti was released from custody and prosecutors decided to drop their case.
After being released last year, Gotti, 46, who lives with his wife Kim and six children in Oyster Bay Cove, announced he wanted to write a book and possibly do a film. Gotti's attorney said earlier this year Sylvester Stallone met with Gotti and had expressed interest in a portraying the late mob boss in a film.
Neither Gotti nor his attorney Charles Carnesi could be reached for comment Wednesday. But Gotti told The Associated Press "It's going to be filmed in New York, I've been working on it in New York, we can be an active player in the situation from start to finish . . . They were willing to hear my thoughts and they assured me the script would be absolutely accurate, the script would be fair."
In a statement released by Fiore Films, Gotti said earlier films misrepresented his father's life. "None of these projects were done in cooperation with my family and in most cases did not accurately reflect our lives," said Gotti in the statement. "This film will not be a mob exposé, but rather the true story of my life and relationship with my father."
Fiore said a number of A-list actors have expressed interest in the project, including Stallone.
The script is being written by veteran actor Leo Rossi, with the active assistance of Gotti, as well as his siblings, Fiore said.
Gotti is also planning to write a book. A finished script is expected by year's end, with pre-production starting early in 2011, according to Fiore.
Gotti became a key leader in the Gambino crime family after his father was arrested in late 1990. But investigators and federal witnesses said Gotti proved to be a divisive figure who earned the resentment of a number of older mobsters.
During his four mistrials Gotti maintained he'd abandoned mob life and withdrawn from the Gambino crime family conspiracy.
Some casting suggestions for the Gotti movie:
PAUL SORVINO as John Gotti Sr.
MATT DAMON as John Gotti Jr.
SHARON STONE as Victoria Gotti
"Jersey Shore's" DJ PAULY D as Carmine Gotti Agnello
