Last September, Huntington Manor firefighter Richard Holst died after having a heart attack during a predawn arson at a bagel cafe in a Huntington Station strip mall. 
On Monday, a little more than nine months after Holst's death, the Huntington Manor Fire Department extinguished a fire next door to the bagel cafe. 
"Being the chief in charge, it is a sad thing to stand in the same spot, working in the same location," Chief Mark Sciallo said Tuesday. "It brings back memories of the kind of person Rich was. It affects us all ... It is very heartbreaking." 
Huntington Manor firefighters responded to a call at about 9:30 p.m. after a fire broke out at Mia Bella Pizza near Depot Road and East 17th Street. 
The fire apparently started in a pizza oven and spread to a rear wall. The Greenlawn Fire Department assisted at the scene, with the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department providing standby coverage for Huntington Manor. Firefighters needed about 20 minutes to get the fire under control, Sciallo said. The fire does not appear to be suspicious. 
There was one injury: A firefighter had a lacerated nose. 
Holst, 60, a chaplain, had a heart attack at the scene, where he was involved in fighting the September fire, Sciallo said. A committee in April voted not to include Holst's name on the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Albany. 
A vote to include Holst deadlocked 5-5. His petition will be reconsidered at a future meeting. 
The committee members who voted against Holst said his death didn't meet the inclusion criteria because he wasn't in the line of duty when he died. Records show other firefighters have been included on the wall after dying in accidents, of heart attacks and, in one instance, during military duty in <a href="/topics/Iraq">Iraq</a>. 
Sciallo said one of his goals is to get Holst's name on the memorial. 
Holst was indeed on duty the night of the fire and called in the blaze to the station, Sciallo said.

Huntington Manor firefighters battle blaze at 'heartbreaking' scene

The state Workers' Compensation Board, the <a href="/topics/U.S._Department_of_Justice">U.S. Department of Justice</a> and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation each found that Malverne Firefighter <a href="/topics/Paul_Brady">Paul Brady</a> died in the line of duty in July 2006. 
But this week, for the fourth time since he was crushed between the roof of a fire truck and the ceiling of the Malverne fire house, the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial's selection committee rejected a proposal to add <a href="/topics/Paul_Brady">Brady</a>'s name to the more than 2,300 already on its memorial wall in Albany. 
"It feels like an insult," Brady's sister, Patricia Duffy of Rockaway, N.J., said Tuesday. "It's a matter of him not being forgotten." 
In Monday's vote in Albany, five committee members representing paid firefighters voted against Brady, while four representing volunteer firefighters voted yes. The deputy state fire administrator also voted no. 
While the paid-firefighter representatives said they voted based on established criteria, volunteer firefighters Tuesday characterized the split as evidence of bias against them by their paid colleagues.

The committee members who voted against Brady and Holst said their deaths didn't meet the inclusion criteria because they weren't in the line of duty when they died. However, records show other firefighters have been included on the wall after dying in accidents, of heart attacks and, in one instance, during military duty in <a href="/topics/Iraq">Iraq</a>. 
<a href="/topics/Syracuse">Syracuse</a> firefighter Edwin Cook Jr., who represented the New York State Professional Firefighters Association, voted against both Brady and Holst. 
"My men are also ordered to clean the toilets at the beginning of each shift," he said during Monday's meeting. "If they happen to drown in one, do they go on the wall? No. It's a maintenance issue. He was doing a maintenance check. It was a tragedy, it wasn't a line of duty death." 
Of Holst's death, Cook said: "What caused the heart attack? Standing up to make a phone call?" 
Inclusion among the 2,300 names on the wall in Albany brings no money or other benefits to the families and fire departments back home. Nonetheless, spots on the wall at Empire State Plaza near the Capitol are prized as lasting tributes to deceased firefighters' service and dedication. 
"The guy gave his life for his community and the least his brother firemen can do is put him on a place of honor," former Malverne Fire Chief William Ward said of Brady. "To pick and choose the way they're doing it is just wrong." 
On July 30, 2006, Brady, 42, was conducting a maintenance check on the roof of a fire truck parked inside the Malverne fire station when another firefighter - unaware Brady was on the roof - pulled the truck out of the bay and into the driveway. Brady was crushed beneath a ceiling beam, and died hours later. 
In arguing for Brady's inclusion on the wall, Ward and others pointed to the case of Jamel Sears, an FDNY trainee who suffered a fatal heart attack during a 2008 training session. 
In April 2009, the committee rejected the FDNY's petition to add Sears, 33, to the wall, saying he died in a training exercise and not in the line of duty. 
Two months later, after an FDNY appeal, the committee, with the support of the volunteer firefighters on the committee, made deaths during "hands-on training" eligible for the wall and added Sears' name. 
<a href="/topics/Sayville%2C_NY">Sayville</a> fire Commissioner Donald Corkery, the committee's most vocal proponent of including Brady and Holst on the wall, argued that the paid firefighters define line of duty as being "on a third floor with flames shooting out," while volunteers consider all duties related to firefighting as part of their job.

Flushing brothers accused of setting fire to their <a href="/topics/Huntington%2C_NY">Huntington</a> Station bagel cafe, where a volunteer firefighter died later that day, told authorities they did so to collect insurance money to pay off their debts, according to court records.
Sworn statements to <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a> police tell of Robert Khaimov, 28, hatching the plan as business spiraled downward, while his younger brother, Natan Khaimov, 22, tried to change his mind but eventually drove the getaway vehicle on the night of the September blaze.
The brothers, each charged with second-degree arson, appeared in Suffolk District Court in <a href="/topics/Central_Islip%2C_NY">Central Islip</a> Monday as the wife of deceased firefighter Richard Holst and close to a dozen of his Huntington Manor Fire Department colleagues looked on.
Holst, 60, who was also the department chaplain, was not involved in putting out the fire. He died of natural causes after collapsing at the scene, where he helped coordinate rescue efforts.
Third assistant chief Frank McQuade said the volunteers attended the court proceeding Monday "to give Richie's wife moral and emotional support during this tough time."
The Khaimovs are each being jailed in lieu of $250,000 cash bail or bond, a spokesman for the Suffolk District attorney's office said.
Robert Khaimov's lawyer, Barry Black of <a href="/topics/Plainview%2C_NY">Plainview</a>, had no comment. Natan Khaimov was represented by a lawyer from Legal Aid.
In a sworn statement, Robert Khaimov detailed how he thought of the plan to torch his family's shop as bills mounted. "Natan and I were borrowing money from my Dad to keep the business going. Each time it became more difficult to ask," the statement said. "We were really stressed out. I came up with the idea to burn the business and collect the insurance money."
Natan Khaimov, who managed the shop with Robert, told police he initially tried to persuade Robert not to burn the store, according to a sworn statement. Ultimately, he waited in a vehicle near the shop while Robert entered the kitchen, dropped a book of lit matches on boxes, and kicked down a back door to escape, the statement said.

Records: Owners accused of setting fire to LI cafe

Two Flushing brothers who police said burned their own Huntington Station bagel store - a blaze where a volunteer firefighter died - were being held on $250,000 cash bail after being arraigned on an arson charge.
Robert Khaimov, 28, of 158-17 78th Rd., and his brother, Natan Khaimov, 22, of 153-26 77th Ave., were each charged with second-degree arson in the Sept. 9 fire at Über Cafe at 334 Depot Rd. in Huntington Station. They pleaded not guilty.
They were arrested Friday, more than three months after the fire in which a volunteer firefighter died of natural causes after collapsing at the scene.
Richard Holst, a volunteer from the Huntington Manor Fire Department who also served as the department chaplain, was not involved in putting out the fire, but he unexpectedly collapsed while helping coordinate the efforts.
 Det. Sgt. Edward Fitzgerald of the arson/bomb squad of the <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County_Police">Suffolk County Police</a> Department said no new charges were expected, but that the decision to upgrade charges was up to <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a> District Attorney <a href="/topics/Thomas_Spota">Thomas Spota</a>.
Fitzgerald declined to say why he thought the men burned the store or what led to the arrests.
Robert Clifford, a Spota spokesman, said he knows of no plans to increase the charges.
The pair was arraigned at First District Court in <a href="/topics/Central_Islip%2C_NY">Central Islip</a> before District Court Judge Patricia M. Filiberto. They appeared without attorneys and are due back in court Monday, Clifford said.
At Holst's wake, those in attendance recalled the 60-year-old volunteer as a dedicated 31-year veteran who had served as chaplain for 25 years.
"He lived his life as a chaplain," department associate chaplain Edward Billia said then. "He believed in it."
A retired <a href="/topics/National_Grid">National Grid</a> employee, Holst also was a Navy veteran of the <a href="/topics/Vietnam_War">Vietnam War</a>.
"He really is sorely missed," said Mark Sciallo, chief of the Huntington Manor Fire Department. "We do feel it especially now around the holidays. He was our chaplain and there are lot of events that have transpired since his passing. He really was a true asset to our department."

Richard Holst of Huntington Station had not fought a fire in years, though he was a Huntington Manor firefighter for more than three decades. 
But he was no less a member of the fire department, fellow firefighters said Monday at his funeral. As the department's chaplain, he spent countless hours comforting sick and injured firefighters and their families, often visiting them at home or in hospitals.

"It's pretty clear that Richard Holst was a hero," Levy said to hundreds of mourners, including dozens of firefighters in blue dress uniforms, during a funeral Mass Monday at St. Hugh of Lincoln Church in Huntington Station. 
"We go to sleep at night knowing that people like Richard Holst are there to protect us."

An autopsy found that Holst died of natural causes. 
His coffin was carried to the church on an antique Huntington Manor Fire Department truck that passed beneath a pair of enormous American flags suspended over <a href="/topics/New_York">New York</a> Avenue. Dozens of side streets were blocked by police barricades for the procession, and mourners took buses and vans to the church. 
Holst's helmet, inscribed with "Chaplain," rested on the hood of the truck carrying his coffin. 
Holst was born on May 19, 1949, in Rockville Centre and married his high school sweetheart, Noreen, in Queens in 1973. He retired earlier this year from <a href="/topics/National_Grid">National Grid</a> after a 35-year career at the company and its predecessors. 
He joined the Huntington Manor Fire Department in 1978 and became chaplain five years later. He became known to fellow firefighters as "Rev." 
"He was always trying to help," Joseph Williams, commissioner of <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a> fire, rescue and emergency services, said in an interview. "It takes a special kind of person to do that." 
Pete Gunther, a spokesman for the Huntington Manor department, said Holst was "always there to help somebody." 
"It's going to be hard to replace a guy like that," Gunther said. 
Holst was walking home from the Huntington Manor fire house after a fire call Wednesday morning when he saw smoke coming from the Uber Cafe on Depot Road in Huntington Station, officials said. 
He called in the fire, then collapsed in front of the cafe as firefighters arrived to fight the blaze. 
He was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy found that Holst died of natural causes. 
After the service Monday, firefighters saluted as Holst's coffin was carried out of the church. A bugler played "Taps" before pallbearers lifted the coffin onto one of two vintage Huntington Manor fire trucks dating to the 1950s. 
The procession then drove to <a href="/topics/Long_Island">Long Island</a> National Cemetery in Pinelawn for burial.

At funeral, fire chaplain remembered as hero

As the Huntington Manor Fire Department's chaplain, Richard Holst was known to many firefighters only by his nickname, "Rev," the man you turned to in times of stress and grief.
Sunday, the fire department grieved for Holst, along with hundreds from across the region, as they attended a firehouse wake for the 31-year veteran, who died Wednesday of natural causes on a fire call. 
The Huntington Station chaplain, who was 60, lay in repose at the department's headquarters, dressed in his blue uniform with white gloves. At either end of the coffin stood two firefighters at attention throughout the wake. Grim-faced firefighters slowly approached the coffin in pairs. They knelt before it and then stood up slowly, raising a white-gloved right hand to their brow, a final salute. 
A tall, solidly built man with a crew cut, Holst had a light touch as a lay chaplain, said colleagues who elected him to the position time after time for 25 years. 
Being a chaplain meant attending countless wakes and funerals, counseling traumatized firefighters and paramedics, and making house calls on the sick and bereaved. "He lived his life as a chaplain," said Edward Billia, the department's associate chaplain. "He believed in it."
Holst, a retired <a href="/topics/National_Grid">National Grid</a> worker, died outside a fire at the Uber Cafe on Depot Road in Huntington Station, police said. He was not involved in putting out the fire, but he suddenly collapsed while helping to coordinate efforts, officials said. 
As a sign of mourning, the Huntington Manor Fire Department placed two ladder trucks outside to hold aloft a large American flag. Purple and black bunting was placed above the fire house's front door. A digital sign outside the fire house informed motorists and passersby of Holst's passing. "Rest in peace, dear brother," it said.
A funeral Mass will be held Monday at St. Hugh of Lincoln Church in Huntington Station at 10:30 a.m. A Navy veteran of the <a href="/topics/Vietnam">Vietnam</a> War, Holst will be buried at <a href="/topics/Long_Island">Long Island</a> National Cemetery in Pinelawn.

An autopsy determined that the chaplain for the Huntington Manor Fire Department who collapsed Wednesday outside the scene of a pre-dawn blaze died of natural causes, the <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a> County police said Thursday.
The police homicide squad revealed the autopsy results into the death of Richard Holst, 60, of Huntington Station, in a statement issued Thursday afternoon.
Holst had been a volunteer with the department for more than three decades.
Holst no longer fought fires, but had been walking home from an earlier call when he called in a fire at the Uber Cafe on Depot Road in Huntington Station.
Meanwhile, Holst's family and beloved fire department plan to formally mourn him beginning Saturday at the department's headquarters and concluding with a burial at a military cemetery.
Holst's wake will be at fire department headquarters at 1650 <a href="/topics/New_York">New York</a> Ave. in Huntington Station Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.; firematic services will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. The funeral will be Monday at St. Hugh of Lincoln Church on New York Avenue in Huntington Station at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, his widow Noreen said.

Autopsy: Fire chaplain's death was of natural causes

When Richard Holst first became a fire department chaplain years ago, the Huntington Station man had a prescient conversation with his next-door neighbor. They spoke of the rituals of comforting a heartbroken family about a firefighter lost in the line of duty, the neighbor, Constance Lovisa, recalled. 
Then, in a tragic instant Wednesday, Holst became such a firefighter, and a department and the community it serves were left comforting the grieving widow of the comforter. 
"I can't say enough nice things about him," sobbed Lovisa, 74, Holst's longtime neighbor who learned from a reporter that Holst had died. "God almighty." 
In an interview, his widow, Noreen, 59, remembered her husband - her high school sweetheart. He was a retired KeySpan employee who was born in Rockville Centre and grew up in Hempstead. A man who had served in the U.S. Navy during <a href="/topics/Vietnam">Vietnam</a> in the Atlantic Fleet aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga. A man who followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a firefighter. then became head of the state's fire chaplain association. 
"That's an all-consuming passion," said Noreen Holst. 
Whenever there would be a fire in the community, Lovisa said, "I'd see his truck pull out immediately," she said. "He always had his beeper on." 
The Rev. Kenneth Hesset, executive secretary of the <a href="/topics/New_York">New York</a> State Association of Fire Chaplains and chaplain of the Westbury Fire Department, said Holst was heavily involved in association's training program. 
Neighbors said Holst would protect their community even when he wasn't helping with the fire department, by watching over homes while the owners were in <a href="/topics/Florida">Florida</a>. Neighbors said Holst would keep an eye out for suspicious cars and even strategize ways to alternate lighting to fool burglars. 
In everything he did, people who knew him said, he was above all else, reliable - even to people who weren't his close friends. 
"You can count on him," one of the beneficiaries of his unofficial housesitting, neighbor Wynn Gaylor, 82, said. "He was a good guy."

Huntington Station neighbors mourn fallen fire chaplain

A fire department chaplain who offered spiritual guidance to his fellow volunteers collapsed outside a burning bagel cafe in Huntington Station Wednesday and died after being rushed to a hospital, according to officials.
Richard Holst, 60, a 31-year member of the Huntington Manor Fire Department and head of the state's fire chaplain association, who visited the sick and consoled the bereaved, collapsed minutes after he reported the cafe fire.
Wednesday, firefighters in T-shirts bearing the department logo gathered at the Huntington Station home Holst shared with his wife, Noreen, a few minutes' drive from the heavily damaged cafe, where fire officials looked for the cause of a blaze that ripped through the business before dawn.
"He was one of the most loving, caring lay chaplains we've ever had in the association," said the Rev. Kenneth Hessel, who served with Holst on the State Association of Fire Chaplains.
"He had a big heart for the men and women of his department, to be there with them through both the joys and sorrows of life," he said. 
Police said Holst, who no longer fought fires, had been at the firehouse following a previous call and was probably walking home when he saw smoke pouring from the Uber Cafe on Depot Road. He called the department directly just after 3 a.m. as another 911 call came in.
Just after members of his department arrived and broke into the shop, Holst, who was outside watching, collapsed in front of the building. He was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 
While the circumstances of his collapse suggest a heart attack, police said, the cause of death has not yet been determined. Holst's wife said he was in good health and had an annual physical exam in recent weeks.
He had been the captain of the department's Fire Police Squad, which, among other tasks, helps regulate access and traffic at a fire scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. "We don't have anything to make it look suspicious at this time," said Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick. Detectives continued to interview witnesses and people connected with the business through the day.
Nathan Khaimov, who said he has run the business in that location for about a year and a half, was in the parking lot early Wednesday, pacing and smoking. He said he had been interviewed by an arson investigator.
"Right now, we don't know anything. They won't even let me into the store," Khaimov said.
Robert Herley, chief of the Huntington Manor department, said he had known Holst for 22 years. "He was always there for everyone," he said. "Sick, injured, no matter the case may be, he was making a phone call, coming to the hospital to visit members who were injured or sick. He was a stand-up gentleman."
Assistant Fire Chief Fred Steenson Jr., an 18-year veteran who responded to Holst's call Wednesday, had just left the burning building and was conferring with another firefighter when he saw his comrade fall. 
"You don't want to see something like this happen, a guy dying in the line of duty," he said. Steenson described Holst as a "die-hard firefighter" who had no plans to retire. "His heart was into this."
Gov. <a href="/topics/David_A_Paterson">David A. Paterson</a> said in a written statement that Holst served all <a href="/topics/New_York">New York</a> firefighters as the state's chief chaplain. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, my condolences and prayers go to Chaplain Holst's wife, Noreen, and his entire family," Paterson said. 
Before Khaimov bought the cafe, the bagel store had been leased by the victim of a domestic shooting and her husband, Ann and Robert Anderson, records show. Robert Anderson was convicted in March of shooting to death his estranged wife in 2007 as she worked behind the counter of another bagel shop they ran in Huntington.
