Fourth charge added in Elmont rental scam
A 26-year-old Elmont man who was arrested last month and charged with three counts of grand larceny after police said he scammed would-be renters out of deposits on an apartment he had no intention of renting them, was arrested again Tuesday - and charged with an earlier incident.
Nassau County Police said Stanley Heriveaux, of 235 Belmont Ave., surrendered Tuesday at the Fifth Precinct and was charged with third-degree grand larceny, stemming from a fraudulent attempt to rent an apartment at his residence on Dec. 15. The previous three counts of grand larceny were all fourth-degree.
Heriveaux is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hemsptead.
Police said Heriveaux took a $2,750 deposit on the apartment from a 27-year-old man, who later learned that a key he was given to the apartment did not work. He was subsequently unable to reach Heriveaux, police said.
In the prior incidents, police said Heriveaux took a $1,200 deposit from a would-be renter on Dec. 18, then $1,400 from another renter the same day. The second renter gave Heriveaux an additional $500, police said. On Jan. 9, Heriveaux took a $1,400 deposit from yet another would-be renter.
Police said Heriveaux placed ads in his neighborhood offering the three-bedroom apartment for rent.
