A Franklin Square man has been charged with assault after Nassau County police said he stabbed another man in the back early Saturday morning on a street in Elmont.

Jhonfi De Los Santos Martinez, 26, of Harrison Avenue, faces charges of assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

A Fifth Precinct officer was responding to an unrelated auto accident at 4:12 a.m. when he came upon a fight in front of 483 Hempstead Tpke., police said.

The officer observed De Los Santos Martinez punching a 22-year-old man in his lower back, police said. As the cop approached the scene, De Los Santos Martinez dropped a knife but continued to punch the victim in the face, police said.

As the officer attempted to separate the men, De Los Santos Martinez pushed him and ran northbound on Elmont Road, police said. The officer chased the suspect a short distance and, with the assistance of two other precinct officers, placed him under arrest. Police said the knife was recovered at the scene.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for a stab wound to his back, police said.

De Los Santos Martinez will be arraigned Saturday in First District court in Hempstead.
