Freeport crash sends car into building; 2 hurt, cops say

The force of a two-vehicle crash sent a sedan careening up the front steps and into the front door of Freeport building Monday night, authorities said.

The drivers were taken to hospitals with minor injuries as Freeport firefighters shored up the building on North Main Street near Mount Joy Avenue, said Ray Maguire, executive director of the Freeport fire department.

Details on how the crash happened were not immediately available, but the sedan traveled about 20 feet from the road before hitting a building with commercial tenants on the first floor and apartments above, Maguire said.

Three residents were upstairs at the time but were not injured, he said.

Firefighters had to shore up the front of the house because the door and surrounding walls were damaged, Maguire said.

Weather could have been a factor in the crash because a light rain had just fallen and may have made the roads slippery, the fire official said, adding: “It brings the oils . . . to the surface and it becomes an ice-skating rink.”
