A fire Saturday afternoon in a two-story house in Freeport displaced 12 people, according to the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Freeport Fire Department responded to an alarm at 4:30 p.m. Saturday of a fire in a private home on Woodbine Drive West. Eight additional fire departments also responded to assist. Within about 90 minutes, about 75 responding firefighters had brought the blaze under control, the fire marshal's office said.
There were no injuries, the fire marshal’s office said. The residents, eight adults and four children, were being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Desiree Ramos Reiner, a spokesperson for the Red Cross, said the organization had registered two families for emergency assistance, including financial help that can be used for temporary housing, to replace lost items, or other needs.
"In the next couple of days our casework team will reconnect with them," Ramos Reiner said, and "connect them with government agencies and nonprofits that may be able to help them."
The fire marshal's office and the Nassau police arson squad were investigating the cause of the fire.
No other information was immediately available.
