Police responding to a motor vehicle accident in Freeport arrested a driver Tuesday and charged him with driving while intoxicated, reckless endangerment and assault, among other things, after officials said he assaulted his girlfriend.

Eric James, 36, of Sportsman Avenue, Freeport, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, two counts of third-degree assault, reckless driving and DWI, Freeport police said Wednesday.

James was arrested by officers responding to the scene of an accident on South Bayview Avenue at 9:06 p.m. Tuesday.

Freeport officials could not immediately provide details of the alleged assault. Arraignment details were not immediately available, either.
