A Freeport man faces an arson charge after police said he lit paper on fire and threw it down a garbage chute inside his apartment building on Monday.

George Brown, 40, of 76 S. Bergen Place, was arrested about 11:40 p.m. Monday and charged with second-degree arson, police said. He is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Nassau County police said that just before 10 p.m., Brown took the paper, lit it and tossed it down the chute, where it ignited garbage in the trash compactor.

It was not clear what prompted Brown to toss the burning paper into the chute.
