Freeport voters Tuesday night approved by a margin of nearly 4-1 a bond referendum that will devote $6.9 million toward several construction projects.

The 803-212 vote entitles the district to $5 million through the state's Qualified School Construction Program that would be used to tackle the most critical construction and capital projects identified in the district's Five-Year Facility Plan, said Freeport Schools Superintendent Kishore Kuncham.

The remaining $1.9 million funds would come from the district's Capital Reserve Fund Project that will allow the schools to replace the athletic field at Freeport High School and install a synthetic turf field with markings for multiple sports and new lighting.

"I am grateful to our community and I am proud of their support and the support of the Board of Education for this important initiative that will not only address many critical projects for the benefit of our students and our community, but will also allow us to take advantage of the state program that will save us almost $1 million dollars in interest costs," Kuncham said after the vote.
