A Uniondale man died after being struck by a Jeep as he attempted to cross Stewart Avenue on Monday evening in East Garden City, Nassau County police said.
Police said Cristobal Mendoza-Perez, 59, was crossing the westbound lanes just east of Quentin Roosevelt Boulevard when he was struck by a 2016 Jeep Wrangler just after 6 p.m. Mendoza-Perez suffered what police described as “serious head injuries” in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a 27-year-old man, remained at the scene and was not charged, police said.
As a result of the crash, police closed access to westbound Stewart Avenue from Merchants Concourse, which is east of the accident scene, and those closures remained in place through early evening for investigation.
