Glen Cove OKs over $325G in state grants for garage, animal shelter

The Glen Cove City Council recently approved state grants for a municipal garage, the animal shelter, the firehouse and a youth court.

The $150,000 for the Brewster Street garage, with a $41,040 city match, is part of $4 million needed to fully renovate the garage, said Ann Fangmann, executive director of the Glen Cove Community Development Agency.

“This garage needs a lot of work,” she said.
The city is hoping to receive other grants in the future, and as the money comes in, “we’ll be addressing the most badly deteriorated areas of the garage in succession,” she said.

A $125,000 grant will pay for replacement of flooring at the Glen Cove firehouse, with a $1,950 city match. 

Another $50,000 will be used to construct dog runs and a kennel at the municipal animal shelter. The shelter is owned by the city and operated by Cove Animal Rescue, which will provide a $13,500 match.

A fourth grant will fund a youth court program, which educates young people about the criminal justice system.

The council on Aug. 22 also approved applying for a $70,000 federal grant — with a match of up to $10,500 in city money — for a new bus on the city-run loop bus route.

“We’ve needed this loop bus vehicle for quite some time” because the current bus is 12 years old, Fangmann said.
