Glen Cove proposal would hike golf course fees

Most rates at Glen Cove’s municipal golf course would rise $1 to $2, under a proposal now before the City Council.

A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for the Tuesday council meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The increases are expected to bring in $40,000 to $50,000 in new revenue, said golf course administrator Ed Bogan.

Among the increases would be a $1 increase in greens and golf cart fees – which vary by date, time and membership status – and a $1 increase in tee reservations, from $3 to $4. Guest and twilight golfing fees would rise by $2. Annual permit fees would stay the same. The standard permit fee is $95 a year for Glen Cove residents and $495 for nonresidents.

Even with the increases “we’re still significantly cheaper than anyone else,” Bogan said during last Tuesday’s pre-council meeting, comparing Glen Cove’s rates with those of four other public golf courses in Nassau County.

“It’s a tremendous value if you’ve gone around and played at other courses,” Bogan said.

Mayor Reginald Spinello said the increases are modest.

“I don’t believe $1 will faze anyone,” he said.

This would be the first fee increase for the Glen Cove course since 2011. Golf revenue increased about $40,000 between 2014 and 2015, largely because of warm weather in the last months of the year, city spokeswoman Lisa Travatello said. Expenses at the course have fallen by $120,000 over the past two years, she said.

The new rates would go into effect no later than Feb. 1, Travatello said.
