Nassau County police are asking for the public's help in finding a chalice that was stolen from St. Agnes Cathedral, the home church of Bishop William Murphy, head of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
The gold-plated, sterling silver chalice was last seen Sept. 22, police said.
It has an inscription from 1962 reading, "Dear Jimmy Love Mom and Dad." It has "a crystal node, and platinum cross with a female wedding band attached," police said in a statement.
The goblet-shaped chalice, used to hold sacramental wine during Holy Communion, was taken from a rear closet of the cathedral at 29 Quealy Place in Rockville Centre, police said.
In reply to email requests for comment, Sean Dolan, a spokesman for the diocese, said he did not have any further information.
Detectives ask anyone with information about the theft to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All callers will remain anonymous, police said.
