The Goose Creek Drawbridge on the Wantagh Parkway was stuck in an open position for hours Saturday morning after a lightning strike caused mechanical problems, transportation officials said.
The bridge was hit by lightning about 10 p.m. Friday.
"Bridges crews went out immediately," said Eileen Peters, spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Transportation. "They have been working all night long."
All lanes of the parkway, also known as Jones Beach Causeway, were closed for a few hours, starting from Ocean Parkway and exit W6 - Merrick Road. Motorists were advised Saturday morning to use the Meadowbrook State Parkway as an alternate route, Peters said.
At 10:51 a.m., the bridge reopened, in time to serve motorists headed to the beach. One lane in each direction remained closed to do roadwork related to the repairs, officials said.
