Underage drinking and fake ID crackdown to last through Labor Day, governor says

A crackdown on underage drinking at summer concerts and hot spots will last through Labor Day weekend, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said.

State investigators and law enforcement officers will be out "at various concerts venues and places where young adults congregate across the state," according to a news release Tuesday from the governor's office.

They'll be looking for fake identification used by underage drinkers.

"Underage drinking and the bad decisions that follow can have devastating and life-altering consequences," Cuomo said in the release. "By targeting fake IDs and increasing enforcement at summer concerts, we will help avoid needless tragedy and will send the message that this reckless behavior just isn't worth it."

Enforcement will be carried out by the Department of Motor Vehicles' Division of Field Investigation in partnership with law enforcement agencies.

Those who have a fraudulent ID will be arrested and their fake documents will be confiscated, officials said. Those arrested face administrative action that normally results in a suspension of their license for a minimum of 90 days.

Twenty concertgoers were arrested on various charges Saturday after a concert at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center in Darien Center, outside Buffalo, and seven fake IDs were confiscated, officials said.

5 Seconds of Summer, a rock band with a younger fan base, performed Tuesday night at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh and will again Wednesday night.
