Great Neck apartment fire extinguished

An apartment fire in Great Neck has been put out and the cause is under investigation, Nassau police said late Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was reported just before 2 p.m. on Overlook Avenue, police said. A main street, South Middle Neck Road, had been closed between Schenck Avenue and Susquehanna Avenue but was reopened by 4:30 p.m., police said.

The blaze started in an apartment at 1 Overlook Ave., a large residential complex in the village of Great Neck Plaza, said Brian Hetey, an assistant to village Mayor Jean Celender, who has been at the scene.

Police said there were no injuries.

Hetey, who also went to the scene, said the fire was minor and no one had to be evacuated.

The fire has been contained and emergency responders started to pack up at 3:15 p.m., he said.

Volunteers from at least two fire districts were at the scene, said an official from the Manhasset-Lakeville fire department, which has been directing rescue efforts.
