Great Neck Estates Airbnb hosts may still be able to rent homes

Airbnb hosts living in Great Neck Estates may still be able to rent their homes out for the summer season, as the village board continues to weigh a ban on short term rentals.

Since April, the village has been considering a new local law that would prohibit all rentals less than 60 days, to protect the “health, safety, and welfare of the community.”

The public hearing has been repeatedly adjourned, and is now set to continue at the July trustees meeting.

Short term rentals, through sites such as Airbnb and VRBO, threaten the village’s residential character and also compete with longer term rentals, the local law reads.

The village isn’t alone in taking measures to curb rentals. Residents living in the towns of Southold and Islip are not permitted to rent their homes out for fewer than 14 nights.

The hearing will be at 8 p.m. on July 11 at village hall, located at 4 Gateway Drive, in Great Neck.
