THE BUDGET

The district proposes a $216,697,754 budget for 2015-16, a 1.23 percent increase from the current $214,067,850. The local tax levy would increase 1.56 percent, from $196,435,489 to $199,496,645. The increase is within the state tax-cap limit of 2.56 percent, so a simple majority vote is required to pass the budget. The district said it could not estimate the school tax on a single-family home because it had not received final assessed values from the county. The proposed budget includes a step increase for teachers of 2 percent and brings in 23.5 new teaching positions.

Voters also will be asked to allow the district to establish a $19 million capital-reserve fund for capital improvements. The district said the funds would come from an annual transfer of surplus money and money from existing reserves, and the measure would have no impact on the tax levy.
