An incident at Green Acres Mall Saturday evening, when a man grabbed the hand of a young boy and attempted to walk away with the child before a family member intervened, does not warrant an arrest, Nassau County police said Tuesday.

Detectives from the Fifth Squad in Elmont interviewed the suspected man and viewed surveillance video from the Valley Stream mall to determine that the incident "was not criminal in nature," said Nassau police spokesman Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun.

Detectives did not interview the boy's parents, who were "unavailable" for questioning, LeBrun said.

"There is no threat to the public," he said.

Police said Monday that the subject, identified as being about 35 years old, was seated on a bench in a common area of Green Acres about 5 p.m. Saturday when he grabbed the boy's hand and attempted to leave with the child. When a family member intervened, the man walked away, detectives said.

LeBrun said the man is not suspected in any similar incidents.
