A road maintenance worker found a handgun in a sewer basin in Hicksville on Monday, Nassau County police said.

The gun was found at 8:28 a.m. in the sewer near the intersection of Newbridge Road and Ball Park Lane, not far from Holy Trinity High School.

Police said the gun was turned over to investigators, who now will try to determine where the gun came from and how it ended up in the basin.

Police could not immediately detail the make and caliber of the gun.
