Hauppauge-based Castella Imports has announced it is recalling certain lots of Castella chicken base, which is used to make chicken soup.

The company said the soup base could be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children and others with weakened immune systems.

No illnesses have been reported to date, according to the company.

The recalled chicken base was sold in 1-pound jars at retail stores nationwide.
